How Scammers Use AI to Trick You

Imagine getting a message from your CEO: "Can you send the login details? I’m locked out — urgent."

It looks legit.

The tone feels right.

But it’s not them. It’s a scammer, using AI.

Yes, we’ve reached that point.

Today, AI tools are being used to write perfect phishing emails, generate deepfake video calls, clone voices, and even build fake LinkedIn profiles. And it doesn’t take a hacker to pull this off. Just someone with time, determination, and access to free online tools.

Here’s what I’m seeing more and more in the field:

• AI-written emails that pass as real• Deepfake Zoom calls impersonating managers or colleagues• Cloned voices used in fake ransom or family-emergency calls• Entire fake companies and job offers, built with AI-generated photos and text

The reality is that trust is no longer automatic. If it sounds urgent and unusual — question it. If it asks for credentials or payments — verify it. And if it feels just a bit ‘off’

— listen to that instinct.

Here are a few steps I recommend to every professional and organization:

1. Always verify important requests through a separate, known channel (a phone call, for example).

2. Slow down. Urgency is one of the oldest tools in a scammer’s toolbox.

3. Use two-factor authentication (2FA) on every important account — it can make a huge difference.

4. Train your team regularly. Cybersecurity isn’t just IT’s job anymore. It’s everyone’s responsibility.

This isn’t about fear.

It’s about awareness.

And it’s about resilience.

The line between what’s real and what’s fake is thinner than ever. Scammers don’t need to break in — they just need you to open the door for them.

Stay alert.

Stay skeptical.

Stay ahead.
